IP68 Ratings Explained: What Makes Your Devices Waterproof?

IP67 vs. IP68: Which Device is Best for You?

More and more device manufacturers incorporate some form of dust and water resistance, which is a welcome change. Still, you don’t want to throw your phone into a nearby pond for fun.

Water resistance means something is waterproof no matter how long it has been inundated; waterproof means that the product can, to some extent, prevent water from entering, but not completely.

Regarding smartphones and smartwatches, it’s almost always about their water resistance. It cannot survive indefinitely in the water.

IP is the standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to determine the resistance of electrical appliances to freshwater and conventional raw materials, such as dirt, dust, and sand.
